Music Teacher
Job Description:
Music Teacher
Start Date: August 2026
The Role
We are seeking a talented, passionate, and committed Music Teacher with responsibility for leading the school’s Band and Orchestral Programme across all grade levels. The successful candidate will teach classroom music within their assigned grade range while developing and directing ensembles that nurture musical excellence, creativity, and performance confidence. This role requires a teacher capable of inspiring students of varying ages and abilities, building strong instrumental foundations, and cultivating a vibrant music culture that supports both individual musicianship and collaborative ensemble work. The ideal candidate will have strong instrumental experience, conducting ability, and a genuine enthusiasm for guiding students in the art of ensemble performance.
The School
Founded in 2016, the school is a well-established K–12 international school located at the foot of YuQuan Mountain in Haidian District, an area widely recognised for academic achievement and its strong connections to top universities. The 200,000-square-metre campus features purpose-built facilities, landscaped gardens, and more than 140,000 square metres of green space. The school’s curriculum integrates Chinese and Western educational strengths, offering a bilingual and internationally aligned framework. The Performing Arts Department plays a central role in school life, providing students with extensive opportunities in music, drama, dance, and ensemble performance from the early years through to high school.
Key Responsibilities
The teacher will deliver high-quality music instruction that develops students’ understanding of musical concepts, notation, instrumental technique, and performance skills. They will lead the school’s band and orchestral ensembles, planning rehearsals, selecting repertoire, preparing students for concerts, and coordinating performances for school events and community functions. The role includes identifying and nurturing musical talent, guiding students through progressive ensemble levels, and ensuring that rehearsals are structured, inclusive, and musically enriching. The teacher will contribute to the ongoing development of the music curriculum, integrating opportunities for composition, improvisation, listening, and cross-disciplinary connections. Assessment will be based on practical performance, musicianship skills, reflective tasks, and ensemble participation, with personalised feedback supporting each student’s musical growth. The teacher will play an active role in co-curricular music activities, support festivals and competitions, and help maintain instruments, equipment, and performance spaces. Collaboration with Performing Arts colleagues is essential, including joint planning, ensemble coordination, and involvement in school-wide productions and events.
Classroom and Rehearsal Environment
The teacher will establish a positive, organised, and musically stimulating environment that encourages creativity, disciplined practice, respectful collaboration, and confident performance. They will ensure safe use of instruments and resources, promote a strong rehearsal ethic, and cultivate a culture in which students enjoy learning, performing, and expressing themselves through music.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should hold a degree in Music, Music Education, or a closely related field, along with a recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE, QTS, state certification, or national teaching licence. Experience teaching school-aged learners and leading ensembles is essential. Strong instrumental proficiency, conducting experience, and a successful track record of working with bands or orchestras are required. Experience in international schools, ensemble curriculum development, and student-centred arts education will be considered advantageous.
